What you should install this fortnight

Samsung Internet Browser
Free
Android http://www.snipca.com/41893
Samsung has added new security features
to its browser that automatically block
web trackers and always connect you to
encrypted HTTPS
versions of sites.
The updated app,
which is available
for all Android
phones, also offers
instant access
to the privacy
dashboard, so
you can see how
many trackers it’s
blocked.

Knotwords
Free*
Android http://www.snipca.com/41905
iOS http://www.snipca.com/41906
This addictive new game is a cross between
Wordle and a crossword. Instead of working
out which words to
fill in by solving clues,
you have to guess
them using the set of
letters provided, and
make them interlock
with other words
in the grid. You can
play one Knotwords
game free every
day or pay £4.59 for
unlimited play.

BEST NEW APPS

Compass Orientation GPS Map
Free*
iOS http://www.snipca.com/41894
Compass apps can be fiddly to use, but
this one makes it easy to see where
you’re going. Hold your iPhone up and
it switches to a
mode that overlays
a compass on the
view in front of you.
Lower your device
and it shows a GPS
map to give you
a broader view of
the area, and the
direction you’re
travelling. The full
version costs £9.99.

ANDROID
Change unsafe passwords
using Google Assistant
Google has added a useful security
feature to the Chrome app for
Android that lets you use Google
Assistant to change passwords that have
been exposed in data breaches. This saves
you needing to reset logins manually –
though you can still do so – and makes it
easier to secure unsafe accounts.
To use the new option, tap the three-
dot menu icon in the top-right corner of
the mobile browser and choose Settings,
then Passwords. Tap ‘Check passwords’
and Chrome will scan your saved login

details and tell you which
passwords have been exposed
in a data breach or “entered
on a deceptive site”. If it finds
any, look for a message
below the ‘Change password’
button that says ‘Let Google
Assistant help you change
your password’ (see our
screenshot below left).
Some sites aren’t yet
compatible with the feature,
so won’t show this message.
Tap the button, select ‘I agree’
and Google Assistant will log
you into the affected website,
reset your current password
and suggest a strong new one

  • or you can choose your own. Tap ‘Use
    password’ to confirm and Google
Assistant will save the new login to
    Chrome’s password manager, overwriting
    the old one.
It’s a brilliant idea and means you
    won’t delay changing leaked passwords
    until it’s too late.

ANDROID
Translate languages instantly
using widgets
With the holiday season upon us,
Google has picked the perfect time
to introduce two new widgets for its
Translate app for Android. These make it
easier to understand and converse in the
local language when you’re abroad,
without needing to open Translate first.

The ‘Translate Quick
Actions’ widget (^1 in
our screenshot left)
features a shortcut for
quickly translating
words and phrases to
and from foreign
languages, a microphone
button for spoken
translations and a
shortcut to Conversation
mode, which lets you
translate both sides of a
bilingual chat. It also
includes the option to
translate text you scan
with your phone’s
camera, such as street
signs, menus and documents.
The other widget, Saved Translations^2 ,
lets you instantly access useful phrases
that you’ve translated from English to
another language, and browse your
history of recent translations.
To use the new widgets, long-press
an empty area of your home screen,
select Widgets and scroll down to
Translate. Press a widget and drag it to
the desired position on your screen,
where you can resize it to fit. Both
widgets use Google’s Material You design
to match the colour scheme of your
phone’s wallpaper.
Google Translate also now lets you back
up your translations to your Google
account, so you can access them from any
device on which you’re signed in.
