Make Office Better Top tips for MS Office & LibreOffice

LIBREOFFICE WRITER &
MICROSOFT WORD
Tweak your highlighted
words and characters
It’s quite easy to
accidentally fall a few
characters short when
you try to select specific words in a
document (as we have with the word
‘shortcut’ in our screenshot below). Moving
the mouse over the unselected characters
can be fiddly, so instead memorise the
Shift+Left arrow/Right arrow keyboard
shortcut. This moves the selected bar one
character at a time in the direction you
choose. There are several variations of
this, including Ctrl+Shift+Left arrow/
Right arrow, which moves the bar one
word in either direction. Also useful is
Shift+Home/End, which moves the bar to
the beginning/end of the line.

ONLYOFFICE
Stop converting URLs
to hyperlinks
Version 7.0 of OnlyOffice
(released in January) converts
URLs and file paths into
clickable hyperlinks when you type
them in the document editor. If you
don’t want this to happen, you’ll have to
turn it off by clicking File at the top left
(^1 in our screenshot above right), then
Advanced Settings on the left^2 , followed
by ‘AutoCorrect options’ in the middle^3

and unticking ‘Internet and network
paths with hyperlinks’^4. Click ‘Close’,
then Apply at the bottom. From now on,
when you type a URL, it will stay as plain
text, without being clickable.
Incidentally, if you keep the setting
enabled, you’ll need to type part of the
URL’s prefix to make it work, eg www or
https. Simply typing microsoft.com won’ t
be recognised as a hyperlink.

MICROSOFT EXCEL
Pick a day to start counting weeks
By default, Excel’s WEEKNUM
function counts the number of
weeks in a year and treats Sunday

as the first day of the week, but you can
change this to start from a different day of
the week – which can alter the result.
To do this, click the cell where you
want the number to be shown, then type
=WEEKNUM(A1, (where A1 is the cell
containing the date – as it is in our
screenshot below^1 ). As soon as you
type the comma, you’ll see options to
change the day from Sunday^2. Either
click one to enter the day you want, or
type the number associated with it. For
example, to count weeks starting with
Mondays, type =WEEKNUM(A1,2).
You’ll see the result appear in the cell
you’ve got selected.

Make animations apply across all items

You can group objects
in a presentation so the
same animation can be
applied to them all, saving you the
hassle of adding them one at a time.
To do this in PowerPoint, click all the
objects while pressing down the Ctrl
key. Once they’re selected, right-click
them and hover over Group in the
menu, then click Group again (see

screenshot). You’ll now see the
lines around the objects combine
into one. It’s a similar process in
LibreOffice Impress, though you
have to press Shift when selecting
the objects. Alternatively, you can
group objects by pressing the
shortcut Ctrl+Shift+G. Visit http://www.

Impress shortcuts.
