profile and you’ll be able to pay to turn
them off. Brave also says it doesn’t censor
or bias results using “secret algorithms”.
Brave Search is now the default search
engine in the Brave browser for desktop
and mobile devices, and can be manually
added to other browsers (see Issue 625,
page 55). In April, it introduced a useful
feature called Discussions, which
includes relevant content from Reddit
forums in its results. We saw Discussions
in action when our Windows 11 search
showed helpful answers from Reddit
below the top two results from Microsoft
(see screenshot below). Our travel search
suggested interesting, non-commercial

links, as well as essential train-booking
sites; while our recipe search similarly
combined the usual big-name sources
with informative but lesser-known blogs.
Unlike DuckDuckGo and Startpage, Brave
told us the World Cup start date at the top
of the page, and did likewise for our
weight conversion.

Startpage

Startpage describes itself as “the
world’s most private search
engine” and, though it’s not as
versatile as DuckDuckGo, it’s a great
choice if you like the speed and quality of
Google search, but don’t like being spied
on. It uses search results from Google, but
with none of the intrusive data logging
and tracking, so you can quickly find
things online without things finding you.
Unlike Google, Startpage doesn’t store
your searches, record your IP address,
plant tracking cookies in your browser or
share your personal information with
third parties. Your queries are submitted
to Google anonymously, so it never
knows who you are, while a dedicated

Anonymous View – which you access by
clicking the mask icon next to search
results (see screenshot above) – further
boosts your privacy by letting you open
pages via a proxy server.
Additionally, because Startpage doesn’t
save your search data, it frees you from
Google’s filter bubble and delivers a wider
choice of results that doesn’t prioritise
certain sites over others. This was
demonstrated when our Windows
11-related search listed pages in a
different order to Google (which favoured
tech-news sites we frequently visit).
Startpage placed news stories first for
our World Cup search and didn’t offer
an instant conversion for our weight
