this clear. When you visit the Chrome
Web Store via our Snipca URL, you
should see a blue banner below the top
toolbar in Edge. Clicking ‘Allow
extensions from other stores’ here, then
the Allow button in the pop-up that
appears, will fix the problem.
If you don’t see this blue banner, click
the top-right menu (three horizontal
dots) in Edge, then select Extensions, and
click ‘Manage extensions’. The ‘Allow
extensions from other stores’ option will
be on the left here – click the slider to
turn it on (^1 in our screenshot above),
then click Allow^2.

Is BleachBit meant to have white
text on black?

Q

I used CCleaner for years until
Avast bought it and the PUPs
arrived. I thought BleachBit
(www.bleachbit.org) might be worth a

Does Avira need to unblock
Windscribe VPN?

Q

Thanks for answering my
question in Issue 630 (page 71) –
I can now get 10GB a month
using Windscribe (www.snipca.
com/41004). But now my anti-virus,
Avira Antivirus Pro, shows the warning
message ‘hosts file blocked’. Do I need to
change something in Avira?
Trevor Bunce

A

Avira is showing this warning
because Windscribe is
attempting to modify something
called the hosts file, which manages IP
addresses. By default, Avira blocks
anything from changing this file, as it
perceives this as untrusted behaviour.
One solution would be to disable
Avira’s hosts file protection (under
General, then Security in the main
‘Real-time protection’ options), but we
wouldn’t recommend this, as it would
mean other (potentially unauthorised)
programs gaining access to the hosts file.
Instead, try changing Windscribe’s
default connection settings, as it seems
Windscribe only needs to modify the
hosts file when attempting to connect
using the IKEv2 security protocol. Click
the three-line menu button in
Windscribe, then click the Connection
(plug icon) tab on the left. Under
Connection Mode, select Manual and
from the Protocol menu, select UDP.

How can I add VT4Browsers
extension to Edge?

Q

I visited http://www.snipca.com/41356
to download the VT4Browsers
extension (see Workshop Issue
629, page 38). I’m using Edge, but can’t
see the button to add the extension. Any
advice?
Alan Bailey

A

Yes, Alan first needs to allow
extensions from other stores in
Edge – apologies for not making

try, as you recommended in Issue 627
(page 51). But each time I use it, the
screen is completely black, with white
writing. Is something wrong?
Peter Alexander Carr

A

As Peter says, BleachBit seems to
default to a ‘dark mode’-type
interface, making some of the
options hard to see. There’s an easy way
to remedy this, though. Click the
BleachBit icon in the top left-hand
corner, then select Preferences. In the
window that opens, select the General
tab, then untick the box next to ‘Dark
mode’ (see screenshot below left).

Why can’t I run Snappy Driver
Installer Origin?

Q

I’ve just tried to run Snappy
Driver Installer Origin
(www.snipca.com/41568 – see
Workshop, Issue 630, page 38), and
Microsoft Defender has shown a pop-up
message to warn me about it (as you said
it might). But the ‘Run anyway’ prompt
doesn’t appear, only ‘Don’t run’. What
should I do?
Bob Hornby

A

In the Windows Defender
SmartScreen pop-up you
mention, you should see a small
‘More info’ option just under the main
text on the left – clicking this will reveal
the ‘Run anyway’ option. We did mention
this step in our Workshop, but it’s very
easy to miss.

You need to turn on
this option so Edge
can install browser
extensions from
other stores

Make BleachBit easier to see by disabling
‘Dark mode’ under General Preferences
