WILLIAM
KENYON-SLANEY
2 GOALS

The Three Lions’ first ever
international finished goalless
against Scotland – Kenyon-
Slaney bagged a brace in the
return fixture in 1873. Later,
the former Eton student was
elected as a Conservative MP.

CHARLES BAMBRIDGE
11 GOALS

The son of Queen Victoria’s
snapper, Bambridge reached
six goals after netting in a 13-0
victory over Ireland in 1882,
only for Aston Villa’s Howard
Vaughton to level with him.
Bambridge then hit five more
to regain the outright record.

TINSLEY LINDLEY
14 GOALS

An amateur who wore walking
shoes instead of boots as he
felt they made him faster, the
Nottingham Forest forward
was in a tie for the accolade
when he and Fred Dewhurst
matched Bambridge’s tally,
then claimed it all for himself.

STEVE BLOOMER
28 GOALS

Only Jimmy Greaves has hit
more goals in England’s top
tier than Bloomer’s 314 – he
broke the Three Lions scoring
record in 1898, then doubled
it. Derby’s anthem is named
after him, sung by Jim Smith
and actor Robert Lindsay.

VIVIAN WOODWARD
29 GOALS

The Chelsea forward scored
twice against Wales in 1911 to
pip Bloomer by one goal. His
career was ended by injuries
sustained in World War One,
but he held the goal record for
45 years until Nat Lofthouse
matched his tally in 1956.

THE LIOnS LADDER

Kane will become the 10th man to claim England’s outright goals record

34 July 2022 FourFourTwo

“IT WASn’T THE START I WAnTED...”

Kane’s presence as a figurehead has probably had at least a small
part to play in the improved relations between the England squad,
the general public and media in recent years. Results are undoubtedly
a factor in that – not only has the striker delivered consistently on an
individual basis, but he’s brought the Three Lions closer to glory than
at any point in the last half-century.
His goalscoring feats propelled Spurs to another level, too: a first
ever Champions League final and a second-place finish in the Premier
League – their highest position since 1963. Kane has won the league’s
Golden Boot on three occasions – on the day we speak, his tally for the
club stands at 244 in just 382 games.
He has emphatically returned to form in the second half of 2021-22,
after Antonio Conte’s arrival, and has already earned legendary status
at the club. “Again it goes so quick – I can’t believe I’ve been playing
in the Premier League now for seven years or so,” he says, assessing
his time in the Tottenham first team. “I’ve still got stuff to improve on,
we’ve still got goals we want to achieve, but Antonio is a really good
manager and I’m really enjoying working with him.
“He brings a real passion, an energy, an enthusiasm to training and
games, and makes you want to work. You want to work hard for him,
you want to run for him. He’s won titles everywhere he’s gone, so you
respect him a lot, and I’m enjoying it. I’ve worked with some brilliant
managers and he’s another. I feel like my game’s improving under him.
Hopefully it continues.”
Kane talks to FFT having already struck 34 goals for Tottenham and
England during the campaign – not bad considering that the first half
of the season was regarded as arguably his most difficult at club level
since breaking through in 2014.
He bagged seven England goals in the space of four November days

  • three against Albania and four in San Marino – which took his tally
to 16 goals in 16 games in 2021, beating the previous national record
for a calendar year which stood at 12. He also notched seven in cup
competitions for Spurs, but his second league goal of the season only
came on December 19 – an almost unthinkable statistic – after the
club suffered a poor start under Nuno Espirito Santo and Kane had an
unsettled summer in which his future was more uncertain than ever.
With Jose Mourinho gone and Tottenham finishing a disappointing
seventh last term, Manchester City looked set to lure him to the Etihad
Stadium, only for chairman Daniel Levy to reject their bids. Kane has
insisted that what happened behind the scenes must remain between
him and the club, and he doesn’t want to go into details now, but he
does concede that the last 12 months haven’t gone perfectly for him.
