TOM FINNEY
30 GOALS

The Preston legend was the
Three Lions’ outright leading
scorer for just one match – his
goal against Northern Ireland
nudged him past Woodward
and Lofthouse in 1958, but
the Bolton icon pulled level
less than three weeks later.

BOBBY CHARLTON
33 GOALS

Charlton seized the England
goal record for the first time
when he surpassed Finney
and Lofthouse in 1963, then
upped it to 33 the following
summer when he provided
the Three Lions’ eighth strike
in a 10-0 tonking of the USA.

JIMMY GREAVES
44 GOALS

It was Greaves not Charlton
who went into the 1966 World
Cup as England’s record scorer

  • four goals against Norway
took him to 43 shortly before
the finals, but he didn’t find
the net once it had started,
adding just one more in 1967.

BOBBY CHARLTON
49 GOALS

Charlton overtook Greaves in
’68, then became the second
player to grab the goal and
cap records at the same time,
after Bloomer. Charlton was
the holder of the goal record
for over 500 games – England
have only ever played 1,028.

WAYNE ROONEY
53 GOALS

The Liverpudlian surpassed
Charlton as Manchester
United’s record scorer in 2017

  • two years earlier, he’d done
    the same at international
    level. His final England goal
was a penalty in the infamous
    Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.
