Scale Aviation Modeller International — November 2017

(ff) #1
be fitted into the bays, which
require feeding them through
holes in the front wall of the
bay – it is a very tight fit, so
go slowly. Next come the four
ammunition cans, which have the
belt of cannon rounds on view.
Careful painting of these parts
will give a highly detailed look.
Now we are up to Stages 123 to 125,
which cover the assembly and fitting
of the wing fuel tanks. There are two
leading edge tanks, and two that fit
between the wheel and cannon bays.
Though they will be mostly hidden
from view (unless you cut away
panels to expose them), they can
just be seen through openings in the
spars and bay walls. The instructions
state that these are painted silver,
but my reference pictures show them
to be painted in a red lead primer,
which makes them more visible
when the wings are closed up.
Fitting the roof and seven
strengthening spars now finishes
off the undercarriage bays. The
spars are beautifully moulded, and
even feature the lightening holes.
With the bays installed, the outer
wing panels are fitted. These attach
to the part of the spar that extends
beyond the lower wing panels, and
fit neatly with no filler needed.
Again, here you need to make
some decisions as to which parts
need adding, depending on which
colour scheme you are choosing to
build. Three of the four versions
have leading edge landing lights,
provided on the clear sprue, but
the fourth scheme has a blanking
panel. At this point, you fit the
top wing panels, along with the
cannon barrel fairings, either full
length or half-length, depending
on the version you build.

TO BE
CONTINUED
Next month, I will
conclude my build by
bringing together all the parts
assembled so far to complete the
model. I have been very impressed
with the quality that Airfix have
achieved at such a reasonable
price, especially considering the
sheer amount of plastic supplied.
The instructions are an immense
improvement over the ones supplied
in years gone by, and have made
the whole process very enjoyable.
