Scale Aviation Modeller International — November 2017

(ff) #1
will need some careful sanding
to make the seam disappear
(although it will be hidden when
the fuselage is closed up).
Usually, Airfix provide their
large-scale instrument panels as
two parts: a clear piece with the
instrument faces, featuring raised
detail for the dials, and the actual
instrument panel that slots in from
behind to produce a nicely
detailed panel. The
same system exists in
this model, but this
time you get individual
decals for the instrument
dials and various data plates.
Once this was attached in
place, a matt coat was applied
to the whole panel. Next, the

lenses for the instruments were
picked out with gloss varnish
to produce a very pleasing, and
realistic looking instrument panel.

POWER PLANT
The Typhoon’s powerful Napier
Sabre engine and its construction
are covered in Stages 37 to 85.
The 24-cylinder, “H” layout
power plant is replicated in great
detail; however, should you wish
to motorise your model, Airfix’s
optional electric, flick-to-start
motor can be installed at this
stage. Clear instructions are
given for its installation, and
I like that, if you do motorise
your model, no compromise to

It is a handful!
