point and pick them up elsewhere,
rather than finding that you don’t have
enough power to clear the trees or other
obstacles. Plan your departure carefully,
taking off into wind if at all possible. If
you need to do a vertical take-off, pick
some lateral markers as you did on
arrival. Hopefully you will be able to
use the slightly easier and less power-
hungry towering take-off, but make sure
you can definitely clear any obstacles
ahead of you if you are doing this.
If you are reading this and thinking
that you’ll never be able to fly well
enough to land confidently in a really
tight confined area, don’t worry. Many
PPL(H) holders rarely land anywhere
like that after they have gained their
licences; they simply don’t need to.
One of the few times I’ve done so was
when I was flying with an extremely
gung-ho ex-military instructor in
Russia, who persuaded me to come
down vertically into a tiny clearing in
the forest, between tall trees, on sloping
ground, with wires across our departure
path. But that is another story. •
