Technology Collaboration

BOEING WILL partner with FedEx
Express for the next phase of its
ecoDemonstrator trials in its bid to
“accelerate aerospace innovation”.
Starting in 2018, a 777 Freighter from
the cargo carrier’s fleet will be used as
the platform to test emerging
technologies, including both propulsion
and flight deck advancements.
Mike Sinnett, Vice President

of Boeing Commercial Airplanes
Product Development, remarked:
“The ecoDemonstrator programme is
focussed on harvesting exciting technol-
ogies that will benefit our customers,
the flying public and the environment.
This is the latest step in our 38-year
relationship with FedEx Corp.”
David Cunningham, President & CEO,
FedEx Express added: “FedEx is

committed to developing and
implementing innovative solutions that
connect the world responsibly and
resourcefully. We are proud to be
working with Boeing and use our 777F
to play a key role in bringing future
benefits to the entire aviation industry.”
According to Boeing, next year’s three-
month flight testing schedule will
include: installing a compact thrust

reverser developed in-house to save
fuel, flight deck improvements that will
aid operations at busy airports as well
as flying prototype components that
use manufacturing techniques that
reduce material wastage. After the
ecoDemonstrator flights are complete
the freighter will be returned to FedEx
Express’ fleet.

Improved Performance

for ATR

THE EUROPEAN Aviation Safety Agency
(EASA) has certified the new Standard
3 avionics for the ATR -600 turboprop.
The suite has been co-developed by the
Franco/Italian manufacturer and Thales.
The latest version will, the partners say,
improve pilot situational awareness
through a synthetic vision system (SVS),
the first time such a capability has been
fitted to a commercial airliner, as well
as providing pilots with a more user-
friendly interface.
The most notable addition is the required
navigation performance with authorisation
required (RNP-AR) 0.3/0.3 option, that will

support safe operations in air corridors
with 0.3nm (0.6km) width, enabling safer
operations in mountainous areas or con-
gested traffic environments. The develop-
ment of this latest version of RNP-AR has
been jointly financed by Air New Zealand,
which had asked ATR to investigate
improvements in the systems functionality.
ATR says, the Standard 3 avionics
software will be installed in all new-build
ATRs from the end of this year, and can be
retrofitted to nearly 400 ATR -600 aircraft
that are currently being operated world-
wide, via a simple software upgrade.
