Stars Shine
in BA Safety
Video
Celebrities have joined together to
star in British Airway’s (BA) new pre-
flight safety video that launches in
September. Featuring some of Britain’s
best-loved personalities, including
Gordon Ramsay, Rob Brydon, Sir Ian
McKellen and Rowan Atkinson, the
video will also boost funds for Flying
Start, the global charity partnership
between BA and Comic Relief.
Alex Cruz, British Airways’ Chairman
and CEO commented: “It’s extremely
important to us that customers engage
with our safety video, and involving
some of the nation’s best-known
personalities has given us the chance
to create something fun that we hope
people will watch from start to finish
- and, most importantly, remember.
We’ve worked with Comic Relief since
2010 and customers have already
helped us to raise £16.5m for great
causes and we hope the new video
will enable us to reach and exceed
£20m by 2020.”

Money Can’t Buy Everything
A superstitious Chinese woman was responsible for the delayed take-off of
a China Southern Airlines flight after she threw coins into one of the aircraft’s
engines for good luck. The 80-year-old was detained by police at Shanghai/
Pudong International Airport following the incident that meant the aircraft had to
be evacuated while safety checks were carried out.
Eight coins thrown missed their target, but the ninth nestled inside an engine.
Fortunately, an eagle-eyed passenger reported the woman to the authorities.
China Southern said she admitted she had thrown the coins to pray for a safe
flight. The aircraft took off several hours later after the carrier’s maintenance
crews had conducted a full examination of the engine.
Iranian Boeing
Regular Airliner World contributor Charles Kennedy
commissioned this painting of Boeing 707-3J9C,
EP-SHU (c/n 21126), operated by Iranian carrier
Saha Air Lines from Guild of Aviation Artists mem-
ber Mark White. The artwork was presented to
Charles during the Manchester Aviation Fair held
at the Ringway Visitors Centre on July 22-23.

Historic Flabob Airport, just north of
Riverside, California on the eastern side
of the Los Angeles basin, is renowned
for its ambiance and friendliness.
The airport, which has a 1930s’ feel, is
also a centre for classic aircraft
restoration. From May 19-21 it held
a fly-in for nine Douglas DC-3s and
C-47s based in the western US. The
well-attended event gave enthusiasts
the chance to see the aircraft up close,
without being hindered by crowd lines
or ropes, attend seminars, talk to
aircrews and take a once-in-a-lifetime
ride in one of the historic aircraft.
The airport was closed to all other traffic
apart from the visiting DC-3/C-47s
giving visitors excellent views of
take-offs, landings and fly-bys.
