CityJet the chance to build a Nordic
operation, O’Connell said: “What they
gave us was a core infrastructure in
Helsinki, Finland. We took on their
pilots and cabin crew and converted
them on to the CRJ900, and took on
new pilots because of the scale of the
operation which now has 12 aircraft
operating on behalf of SAS.”
Almost 25 years after founding
CityJet, it was announced on March

24, 2016 that Byrne would lead a group

of investors in purchasing the airline

from Intro Aviation. His plan was to

continue to expand its wet-lease

business while maintaining some of

its own scheduled flying.

Despite the gradual reduction in

services from London City, the

Docklands facility remains an impor-

tant hub for CityJet with its high-

yielding business passengers.

O’Connell confirmed that the airline

is still “fully committed to the airport”

and maintaining a scheduled opera-

tion. “Over the past few months there

has been a progressive reduction in

our scheduled flying, including the

termination of flights from London

City to Nantes, Paris and Rotterdam

and this is all part of a rationalisation

where we have looked at our network

and decided what elements continue
