SOUTH AFRICAN ACCREDITATION SYSTEM (SANAS)
The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is the only
national body responsible for carrying out accreditations in respect of con-
formity assessment, as mandated through the Accreditation for Conformity
Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act (Act 19 of
2006).
SANAS is responsible for formally recognising Laboratories, Certifi ca-
tion Bodies, Inspection Bodies, Profi ciency Testing Scheme Providers and
Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) test facilities that are competent to carry
out specifi c tasks. A prerequisite for accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025: “Gen-
eral requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laborato-
ries”, is that a laboratory must show traceability to the SI.
ACOUSTIC AND VIBRATION LAB – SANAS LAB 1302
We offer traceable, high quality and prompt periodic calibrations of any
brand of sound and vibration instruments that we test in conformance with
all applicable standards or to the manufacturer’s recommended procedures.
Our scope includes the calibration of Microphones, Acoustical
Calibrators, Sound Level Meters and Analyzers, as well as Octave and
Third Octave Filters, Vibration Accelerometers, Vibration Meters, Vibration
Calibrators and Human Vibration Seat and Hand Arm Meters.
Q: Why calibrate?
A1: The characteristics of electronic components used in all instru-
ments naturally drift over time. Therefore, it is necessary to
calibrate instruments at regular intervals to acquire confi dence and
proof of their accuracy. The instrument manufacturers also recom-
mend a re-calibration period on the instrument’s specifi cation.
A2: It could also be for a Legal Requirement, as stipulated in the
Government Gazette Act 73 of 1989 for Noise Control Regula-
tions, 1999; The Mine Health and Safety Act; and the Occupational
Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 to name but a few.
Q: What do I receive upon completion of calibration
A: Acoustics equipment is issued a Certifi cate of Conformance rel-
evant to the specifi cation to which it has been c alibrated. Vibration
Equipment is issued a Certifi cate of Calibration where the values,
complete with the measurement uncertainty, is stated.
Turn-around time for calibrations is typical fi ve to seven days for
DCLF and acoustic equipment, and seven to ten working days for
vibration equipment, depending on the size of the order.
A RECENT SUCCESS
M and N Acoustic Services (PTY) LTD extended its Scope of
Accreditation for DC Low Frequency in February 2017 (SANAS Lab 148 –
DCLF).
We have SANAS Accreditation for AC and DC Voltage, AC and DC
Current, Resistance and Temperature Simulation, and AC and DC High
Voltage/Current.
Our laboratory offers traceable calibration and measurement to the
aircraft and automotive industries, mining industry, electrical manufacturing
sectors and more.
Our DCLF staff members are skilled to maintain a quality management
system and participate in Inter-Laboratory comparison measurements.
