Hurricane IIc

For the 2017 display season, the BoBMF decided to repaint

Spitfire P7350 and Hurricane LF363 in new colours honoring

four surviving Battle of Britain pilots who still are alive. Each

aircraft has been painted in different markings on each side.

Special temporary paint has been used which can easily be

removed again. For the Hurricane the port side of the air-

craft now carries code GN-F. This was originally worn by two

249sq Hurricanes piloted by Tom Neil: P3616 and V7313. Both

were lost during the battle while piloted by other pilots, but

Tom Neil in total flew 141 sorties during the Battle of Britain.

He was credited with twelve confirmed kills and four shared

ones. Tom Neil retired from the RAF as a Wing Commander

and has now reached the age of 96 years. The starboard side

of the Hurricane is coded SB-A in honor of Paul Farnes. He

flew Hurricane P2760 with this code while assigned to 501sq.

The aircraft was shot down over Ashford on 15 September

1940, At that point in time it was piloted by Belgian P/O

Albert van den Hove d’Ertsenryck who sadly lost his life. Paul

Farnes was credited with six confirmed kills, two shared kills,

two probables and eleven damaged. He too retired from the

RAF as Wing Commander and is now 98 years old.

Civil registration G-CJIV which was temporary allocated to

ZM500/00 was cancelled on 17 July 2017. No confirmation

was received before the deadline of this edition, but most

likely it was delivered to DHFS at RAF Shawbury as well (ex

Airbus Helicopters at Kidlington).

Civil registration G-CJXS which was temporary allocated to

ZM512/12 was cancelled on 1 June 2017. As far as we know,

the helicopter remained with Airbus Helicopters at Kidling-

ton until at least mid-July 2017.

Lancaster I

The famous Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BoBMF) Lan-

caster PA474 has recently returned from a major overhaul,

during which it was also painted in new colours. The port side

of the aircraft has been painted in the colours of 460(RAAF)

sq, complete with tactical code AR-L. This represents Lancas-

ter W5005 which completed ninety-four sorties during the

Second World War. Eventually, it would ditch in the Humber

estuary upon return from a raid on Kiel (Germany). This took

place on 27 August 1944 while assigned to 550sq as BQ-N. All

on board managed to evacuate from the aircraft safely. The

starboard side of the aircraft is painted in the colours of 50sq,

with tactical code VN-T. This represents LL922, which was

shot down by a Luftwaffe Bf109 on the night of 7-8 August

1944. The aircraft was on a mission bombing German posi-

tions near Secquevile (France) and crashed near La Frenaya

(France). Three on board were killed, a fourth became Pris-

Seen at the non public Italian Air Force 100 year Gruppo Caccia celebrations at Grosseto on 26 June 2017, F-35A MM7336/32-05 was photographed

banking after take-off. Probably a type we will not see in ‘special’ anniversary colours. (Dietmar Fenners)
