United States Navy (NY)

The 33 US Navy Reserve’s F/A-18A+’s are getting too old, so

the House Armed Services Committee requests the USN to

plan on replacing them as the 2018 National Defense Authori-

zation Act reports. The Reserves fly two squadrons, mostly in

the adversary role, but all 33 aircraft are to be kept as replace-

ment jets for the active F/A-18C fleet. But, the 33 Hornets

stay behind the rest of the fleet’s Hornets and Super Hornets

in terms of technology and can’t fully integrate into today’s

carrier air wing. An upgrade is too most probably costly, so

an early phase out is pending.

Terrible news for blimp lovers... the US Navy has retired

its single American Blimp Corp. MZ-3A blimp. Great news

for those same blimp lovers... the US Navy has offered it up

for auction. The 178ft long MZ-3A (BuNo 167811) has been

inactive since June 2016 when it was deflated and stored at

JRB Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst (NJ). The Navy started operat-

ing the MZ-3A, a modified A-170 commercial airship in 2006

as a sensor evaluation platform. Through the years, it flew

from several locations, including for tests in Yuma Proving

Ground (AZ) when it was photographed with a large sneaky

antenna on top of the blimp and for the US Fourth Fleet.

The sole blimp was last assigned to Scientific Development

Squadron One (VXS-1) at NAS Patuxent River (MD). VXS-1

provides airborne research and development services for the

Naval Research Laboratory. The US Navy operated rigid air-

ships from early 1930s up to mid-1959. The non-rigid blimps

were active during both world wars and after World War II

for anti-submarine warfare and radar early warning.

During July 2017, Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 131 Wild

Cats (‘AC-3xx’) will begin transition from F/A-18C to F/A-

18E. VFA-131, based at NAS Oceana (VA). The squadron will

go through the upgrade by the Oceana Fleet Replacement

Squadron VFA-106 Gladiators (‘AD-xxx’). The transition will

leave three operational F/A-18C squadrons in the whole fleet

and at Oceana: VFA-34 Blue Blasters (‘NE-4xx’), VFA-37 Bulls

(‘AJ-4xx’) and VFA-83 Rampagers (‘AG-3xx’). The US Navy’s

original plans for the F/A-18C fleet called for an Air Wing to

be equipped with two F/A-18E/F Super Hornet squadrons and
