74 AIRLINER WORLD APRIL 2018

M

ore than 20 million
passengers travelled
with Aeromexico last
year; the first time
the carrier passed the
milestone in its 83-year history. The
foundation for this success is a major
expansion of its overseas network, part
of what Paul Verhagen, the airline’s
SVP International Sales, called the flag
carrier’s “internationalisation”.
“We posted 20.7 million passengers
which is a great achievement but at

the same time says a lot about the
potential... to grow further,” Verhagen
told guests at a special event in London
to mark the fifth anniversary of
Aeromexico’s service to the UK capital.
Internal flights still dominate in terms
of passenger numbers accounting for
roughly 13 million of the total, a 1%
increase on the previous year. However,
growth in international travellers was
an impressive 20%.
“We now fly to 93 destinations in total

  • 49 international and 44 domestic,” he

explained. “Last year was the first
year we flew to more international
destinations than domestic.”
Aeromexico has introduced 18 new
destinations in the last three years, with
all but two of them outside of Mexico. It
increased capacity across its network
by “roughly 40-50%” in 2017 alone, and
Verhagen confirmed the carrier is on
course to match that figure this year: “It
will be the fourth consecutive year we
have grown by more than 10%, which in
itself is quite an achievement.”

Adoption of new
technology, such as
the Boeing 787
Dreamliner, has helped
Aeromexico enjoy a
record breaking year.
