Global Aviator South Africa - May 2018

36 Vol. 10 / No. 5 / May 2018 Global Aviator

It was with a deep
yearning for the healing
that only the Drakensberg
Mountains can bring
me that I delved into
that modern wonder
of information – the
internet – in search of
something unique, not the
usual holiday gumpff

It was March 2017 and by that time
accommodation in the Drakensberg
was almost impossible to find. Then
I came across it – Diddly Squat, Zulu
Hut and Inkunzi Cave. Visions of Zulu
impis rampaging over the peaks and
taking over some nondescript cave
flitted through my mind as I clicked
on the virtual tour. I was hooked.
As December crawled closer I
regularly indulged in an appetiser by
watching the virtual tour again and
again. Even better news for our family
was that our little Scottish Terrier would
be a welcome visitor and so Nessie,
her toys and bed went into the car as
well. The drive to the off-ramp towards

Winterton is always boring but as we
headed deeper into the mountains, along
a road that twisted and turned, we all
started relaxing with Nessie by this time
sticking her sharp nose right against the
window to see where we were going.
The property lay just past Dragon
Peaks, home to the Drakensberg Boys
Choir, and as we drove in and got that
all important first glimpse of our home
for the next two weeks, I was amazed.
We had entered a time machine –
going backwards to time of huts, rock
paintings and caves. The Zulu Hut
was all that I had imagined and more.
Built from rock and with the traditional
shape it also had an extension for the
