The Diddly
Squat Eco Abode
Diddly Squat is the third of the
amazing self-catering units.
Situated in a private corner of
the garden, well screened from
everybody else, this is an “up-
market” Eco Abode. Sunken
into the ground, with windows
at ground level providing an
uninterrupted view of the mountain.
A comfortable double bed in a
“bedsit” style layout, with shower
and toilet “en suite”. Cook a meal
on the old wood stove, enjoy a
refreshing solar heated shower
or lie on the bed and enjoy the
changing moods of Champagne
Castle and Cathkin Peak.
Although everything else is
solar powered, there’s one electrical
plug point for your convenience.
The kitchen is fully equipped for
self-catering accommodation,
with a fully functional, easy to
use wood stove, single plate gas
cooker and gas fridge. There is a
small splash pool in which to cool
off on those hot summer days.
It sleeps 1 couple only.
Unfortunately no children allowed.

Steve’s Art
Steve was only nine years old when
he discovered that he has a real talent
for drawing. When he was in the
army, he spent many hours drawing
portraits of soldiers, their girlfriends,
corporals and their families, and
many more. Later in life he started
a silk-screening business and this
afforded him another opportunity to
exercise his artistic talents, starting
with paintings of wildlife which
he printed onto black t-shirts.
Another form of creativity
took over when, at 56, he
started building rock
pools, caves and various other
“concrete works”!
Prints of his artwork are
available in various sizes, on
order. The canvas is imported
and the inks guaranteed for 80
years. Each picture has a code in
the bottom right hand corner.
He has also written a book
about his life, a copy of which
is in each unit. Settle down with
a sundowner one evening and
read – you will not regret it. •

full bathroom with luxurious rock
bath and a separate toilet and rock
shower. Genuine San artifacts decorate
the walls.
The kitchen is fully equipped for
self-catering accommodation, with a
small cooker, microwave, fridge etc.
It sleeps 2 people comfortably, with a
double bed in the separate bedroom.
There is also a large, double
sleeper couch in the lounge/kitchen
area for another couple.
DSTV, heater, fans and Wi-Fi if
you really must have outside world
communication, are there to ensure
your comfort at all times. The Cave
opens out on to a large rock pool and
there are braai facilities alongside the
pool. The pool is not fenced so is not
suitable for families with toddlers.
This is where we will beheading
in December.
