Tim Leatherman’s “aha” mo-

ment came in 1975. While on

a road trip through Europe,

he batled leaky hotel plumb-

ing, and his $300 Fiat (below)

required multiple roadside

fixes. Leatherman had the

right know-how, but not the

right tools. “I was carrying

a scout knife and used it for

everything from slicing bread

to fixing the car. But I kept

wishing I had a pair of pli-

ers!” Back home in Oregon,

he started on the path of

designing a beter multi-tool.

Thirty-five years later, Tim’s
