Two into One Does Go
With two almost identical terminals
and the airport’s privatisation on the
horizon, initial plans called for the
renovation and extension of both build-
ings. However, in 2014 the RIOgaleão
consortium took over the management
of GIG on a 25-year concession and had
radically different ideas. The
consortium consists of Changi Airports
International (operator of Singapore’s
main gateway as well as 50 other

facilities around the world), the
Brazilian construction company
Odebrecht – which hold a majority
stake of 51% between them – and
Infraero, the Brazilian government
corporation responsible for the smooth
running of most of the country’s
airports, owning the remaining 49%.
While initial plans called for continued
operation of both terminals alongside
each other, RIOgaleão had instigated its
own plans. Instead of spreading opera-
tions over two buildings, all but a very
few exceptions - Avianca Brasil still
uses Terminal 1 to board and disembark
its passengers - are now concentrated
in Terminal 2, where a South Pier has
been built and the apron extended to
handle the increased number of
aircraft movements.
Taking less than two years to construct,
the South Pier, which boasts 26
airbridges, opened in May 2016, in time
for the Olympic Games. Meanwhile,
Terminal 1, which underwent its own
renovations just a couple
of years before the airport’s transfer to
the new concession holder, remains
largely empty today.
For RIOgaleão, it made sense to
consolidate most operations in
Terminal 2. No decision has been made
about the future of Terminal 1 although
some shops and restaurants and one of
the airport’s two hotels remain open in
the building.
