Junkers Aircraft Factory Back in Business

Nearly one hundred years after Hugo
Junkers designed and put into series
production the world’s first all-metal
aeroplane, the Junkers F 13, (or rather
a historic replica) has again been
certified for flight.
Dieter Morszeck, the F 13 project
founder and investor, said that long-
forgotten construction skills, such as
using corrugated aluminium, had to be
relearned during the construction of
the replica. Under the careful supervi-
sion of the Swiss Federal Office for

Civil Aviation, engineers and
technicians were able to gradually
bring a piece of aviation history back
to life. Seeking a reliable engine led to
a 450hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp
Junior radial engine – still in use world-
wide – being installed, and brakes and
hydraulic shock absorbers were added
to the landing gear in another example
of modern technology use. However,
such compromises were made in as
few areas as possible, said Morszeck.
Another major challenge was

achieving the aircraft’s initial flight
because there were no pilots with pre-
vious F 13 experience. However, the
replica’s maiden flight on September
16, 2017 went smoothly, and everyone
involved in the project was surprised
by the benign handling characteristics
of the ‘new’ aircraft.
Morszeck revealed there are plans for
a small-scale production run of the F 13
in response to individual market
demand, using all the experience
gained in constructing the first aircraft.

Starliner Restoration Halted
Restoration of a Lockheed L-1649A
Super Constellation, also known
as a Starliner, has been suspended
in the USA due to spiralling costs.
Campaigners are appealing to
Lufthansa to reverse its decision.
The Maine-based newspaper, the Sun
Journal, reports that the project to
return the aircraft to airworthy condi-
tion, which has already cost around
$200m, is to be stopped immediately.
The aircraft will have its wings removed
(an act that will almost certainly mean it

will never fly again) from the fuselage,
with all the parts being boxed up and
shipped to Germany.
Work on the aircraft, D-ALAN (c/n 1018),
began at Auburn-Lewiston Airport in a
purpose-built hangar in 2008 and the
aircraft’s structure has since been com-
pletely overhauled from the ground up.
Aircraft systems and components were
inspected and repaired by FAA certified
specialist workshops both in-house and
off site. Its engines, nacelles, propel-
lers and landing gear had all been over-

hauled and were ready to be installed
and flown.
By the end of last year, the Starliner
project was 85% complete. A
campaign, including an online
petition, has been launched to
encourage Lufthansa’s management to
complete the project in Auburn.
