his is our second 1:144 AFV Club

kit featured in Model Airplane

International. Previously we

covered the F4U Corsair kits. For

any of who missed the Corsair

feature in our April issue, you might not be

aware that AFV Club of Hong Kong, more

commonly known for producing larger scale

armour and recently aircraft models, have

decided to expand their range of products

to include 1:144 scale kits.

This is a refl ection of how much more

popular the scale is becoming.

The Sikorsky SH-3A/D Sea King kit follows

on from AFV Club’s fi rst venture into 1:

scale with the initial release of the P-40 series

of aircraft. Late last year AFV Club announced

they intended to release two new exciting kits.

This Sea King and the F4U Corsair kits would

be launched at the same time early in 2018.

A Little History...

The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King (company

designation S-61) is a US designed

twin-engined helicopter. It was the fi rst

production amphibious helicopter and

one of the fi rst naval choppers to

use turboshaft engines. The Sea King has

its origins as far back as the 1950s. It was

initially designed to combat Soviet Submarine

technology as an Anti Submarine Warfare

(ASW) platform. The Sea King was initially

designated HSS-2 but was subsequently re-

designated as the SH-3A during the

early 1960s.

In 1961 the Sea King entered service with

the United States Navy in its designated

ASW role but was also proved useful in

logistic transport role too. Later, the Sea King

proved to be a valuable asset to the US Navy,

the SH-3 would carry out many other roles

in its long history of service before being

replaced by the Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk.

Various other roles included missions such

as search-and-rescue, transport, anti-

shipping, medevac, plane guard, and airborne

early warning operations.

Several Sea Kings, operated by the United

States Marine Corps HMX-1 unit are still in

use today. More commonly known as Marine
