he IAI Kfir was brought into existence
by the Israeli government’s need for an
all weather ground attack aircraft. At
the time the IAF had been using Mirage
IIIC jets, supplied by Israel’s close ally
at the time, France. In order to meet the need for
a ground attack aircraft the IAF asked Dassault
to develop the Mirage 5 which was essentially a
development from the Mirage III. As a result of an
arms embargo then placed on Israel by France in
1968, Israel developed an unlicensed
copy of the Mirage which they
named the Nesher. This was
then developed into the
Kfir, powered by a General
Electric J79 turbojet engine.
Colombia received their very
fi rst Kfi rs as a result of a trade
agreement between Colombia
and Israel in 1989, which
