The rst of three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners
ordered by LOT Polish Airlines has entered
service. The 294-seat 787-9, SP-LSA, is part
of a wider-reaching eet renewal exercise
under which LOT will take delivery of 11 aircraft
this year alone, including two 787-9s, three
737 MAX 8s and six Embraer 195s.
“LOT is the rst airline in Europe whose
long-haul eet consists only of Dreamliners,” the
carrier’s CEO Rafał Milczarski explained. “They
are still considered to be the most state-of-the-
art aircraft in the world, offering unparalleled
travel experience in its class. Dreamliner is the
driver of even faster growth at LOT, in that way
making us even more competitive, modern and

environmentally friendly. I’m convinced that the
787-9s will open a new chapter in our history,
signi cantly increasing the number of seats on
the existing, most popular routes. The aircraft

will be perfect for our agship routes to Chicago,
New York City or selected Asian destinations
and will enable us to launch completely new
routes as well.”

IN BRIEF

The new S-21 OUTBOUND KIT AIRCRAFT
prototype (N215RD) made its rst appearance
at the Sun ’n Fun Expo and Fly-in at Lakeland,
Florida, in early April, following a maiden ight
on March 28. The two-seat Outbound has been
developed from the S-20 Raven but it has an
all-metal structure in place of the former’s tube
and fabric fuselage and has either tailwheel or
tricycle gear. It has short take-off and landing
performance when powered by the 180hp Titan
340 engine but can also be tted with a 100hp
Rotax 912ULS. Rod Simpson
BELAVIA has agreed to lease three Embraer
195s and two E175s from Nordic Aviation Capital.
Delivery of the rst three aircraft – a E175 and
two E195s – is expected in April 2019 with the
remaining two aircraft following in December
2019 and April 2020. All ve are drawn from the
lessor’s existing order book and the deliveries
will increase the Minsk-based airline’s E-Jet eet
to 12.
MALETH-AERO, the Maltese charter operator, is
to add an Airbus A340-600 to its eet. The former
Etihad Airways jetliner, now 9H-PGS, will be
con gured in a 316-seat layout, including eight
in rst class and 32 in business. It is expected to
enter service in August this year.

The ultra-long-range version of the AIRBUS A
XWB successfully completed its rst ight from
Toulouse on April 23. The latest variant of the
A350 XWB family will enter service with launch
operator Singapore Airlines in the second half
of 2018.
BREEZER showed the prototype of its new
Sport two-seat light aircraft (D-MBZS) at the
Friedrichshafen AERO exhibition in Germany
during mid-April. It is a completely new low-wing
design, unrelated to the existing production
Breezer B400/B600, with an all-metal structure
and a retractable tricycle undercarriage. It rst
ew in late September 2017 and can be powered
by a range of engines from the 100hp Rotax 912
UL up to the 135hp Rotax 915 iS. Rod Simpson
EASTERN AIRWAYS is set to take control of the
London City-Aberdeen route on May 7 currently
undertaken by franchise partner Flybe. The
service will continue to operate twice-daily
(plus one on Sunday) but initially will change
from the existing Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 to
a 50-seat Saab 2000 and then later to a 76-seat
Embraer 170.
