that he was not that disappointed! The
retrievals kept me bodily warm however
the hands and the nose suff ered a bit.
As the day wore on the drift eased and
the models went less distance, thus the
max was raised to 3:00 minutes. In these
conditions, when the models’ DT down
onto the snow the fuselages sink in while
the wings rest spread across the surface.

Thus, after retrieval the front of models
need to be cleared of snow. I learnt
several years ago not to blow the snow
away as the moisture in the breath turns
the snow to ice. I now clear the snow
away with a small brush.

Low Temperature Degradation
The last round was relatively cold with

the low-level drift going North and
the higher levels drifting South. As
mentioned the nylon lines were tight and
in preparing for the fi fth round the DT line
broke. I changed models and that was
my fi nal undoing. The model climbed
well but suff ered the fate that all F1B
fl yers fear, the dreaded prop fold on the
wing. The glide tightened, and the nose
