AeroModeller – June 2018

went down, and the model failed to max.
I fi nished fi fth as the highest non-maxer.
A funny coincidence, but this is the same
place that I fi nished the fi rst time I fl ew in
the event all those thirty years earlier.
There were fl y off s in both F1A and
F1B. In these conditions of heavy snow
cover I’m amazed that the F1A fl yers
can actually run and tow, but they do

  • in these conditions, to fl y F1A to be
fi t (and young!) is a necessity. In F1A at
the end of fourth round only two fl yers
had dropped time. However, in round
fi ve there seemed to be mass suicide as
four fl yers managed a zero score. The
reasons were mainly the failure to unlatch
the towline on launch; the breeze had
dropped and getting up speed to power
the launch and unlatch the hook can be
diffi cult over the snow-covered surface.
At fl y off time the breeze had pretty well
ceased and the max was set at 8:00 in
an eff ort to make the fl y off s a
    one-shot aff air.

Fly Off s
F1B was the fi rst of the fl y off s, and the
fi rst model in the air was that of the Dag
Larsen (Norway) who beat his fellow club
member Vegar Nereng by a few seconds.
Dag was using a six-panel wing, this
wing is being used by several fl yers and
is viewed by many as the best all round
wing currently in use. The wing was
designed by Tony Matthews of Canada
with a Brian Eggleston section and built
in the Ukraine by Stepan Stefanchuck.
The only model that could have foiled
Dag was fl own by Hakan Broberg
(Sweden), A full carbon LDA winged
model, however Hakan launched badly.
One has to get a modern F1B away
correctly to ensure an effi cient climb
pattern. The models in the now calm air
landed only feet away.
In F1A the launch decided the result.
The best and highest launch came from
Per Findahl (Sweden) fl ying a full carbon
fl apped wing model. Per had won the
Bear Cup in Finland the previous week

with the same model.
Well that is the end of the series as
there will be no Holiday on Ice 2019.
I have reported on all of the events in
the AeroModeller when the weather
has allowed them to take place. I have
enjoyed the trips and have many happy
memories of the times spent on the lake.
The question is, what am I going to do
with myself in March next year? ■
