THE FABULOUS

FOKKER D.VIII

Raiding the Divine Archive
This month’s Free Plan is run as a tribute
to two Titans of British aeromodelling:
The late Ron Moulton who was of course
editor of AeroModeller in the 1960s’, and
my late father David Boddington. It was
Ron who spotted that David’s modelling
abilities could be turned in to interesting
articles, and had dad writing fi rst for
AeroModeller in the mid 1960’s.
I was lucky enough to know Ron for

most of my life, and I still smile when
I remember how Ron would call Dad
‘Young David’ as he was 10 years
younger. They were both to die in 2010
and I still feel their loss even now.
For readers of around my age, the
phrase ‘Raiding the Divine Archive’ will
bring back the title of the Be Bop Deluxe
Best of Album. I thought it was too good
a title not to repurpose it, as I’ve pulled
together various strands from my own

and AeroModeller’s archive to put
this together.

Ron’s Fokker D.VIII Design
Dad built his fi rst model of this Fokker
D.VIII soon after the plan originally
appeared in AeroModeller in March 1954.
His was powered by an E.D. Baby (0.5
cc) engine, as was Ron’s original. This is
not a large model so the underwhelming
performance of the E.D. Baby is just

Ron Moulton’s 22 inch span model of the World War I fi ghter - for 0.32 to 0.5cc diesels.
Built by David Boddington and described by Andrew Boddington.
