Following on from our series on

laser-cutting of balsa, Shaun Garrity

sets up and evaluates a computer-

controlled router suitable for ply,

metal and other materials.

hy would you want to

buy a CNC router? Well, I

enjoy building traditionally

constructed aircraft from

balsawood and ply, ranging

from small sport RC models to large 1/3rd

scale WW1 designs but don’t really don’t

relish manually cutting out ribs and

formers etc especially on the bigger

stuff. Another hobby of mine

is electronics and having

a machine that could

drill and mill printed

circuit boards

Although you could use a cheaper

model, the DeWalt router is a reliable

and powerful unit.
