Callair A-9
This is Pete Fardell’s latest model for
Indoor Open Rubber. The Callair was
designed as a cropspreader and has a
somewhat brutalist aspect. These aircraft
have a hard life and there are plenty of
bumps and scrapes and ill-fi tting panels
to enjoy replicating. In particular, large
areas of the fuselage registration are
worn away. Blessed with a perfect side
view in colour, Pete was able to size and
print the panels and stick them to the
sides. The shark ́s teeth will enable it to
chew through table and chair legs.
As I write, Pete is racing to fi nish
this one for the Nats (report next issue)
and get it trimmed in time. I remember
entering the Indoor Nats in the 80s; one
of the fi rst held at the original, smelly,
Walsall site. Living near Dartmoor I had
nowhere to trim the model – a lurid green
Avro Avian monoplane – indoors. I knew
the size of the hall so I took my four-year
old daughter down to the local park and
stood her in the middle of the playing
fi eld. I told her to wave at me when the
model fl ew over her head, walked fi fty
feet away and launched, adjusting the
turn until I got the signal. The next day
I drove up to the Midlands and won the
event. I wish Pete the same success!

David Vaughan
I was sorry to hear of the passing of
David Vaughan. I do not suppose many
newer readers will have known David
but in recent years he has produced a
number of very fi ne indoor scale models.
However, before that, he was one of
the top RC scale modellers, and I mean
among the very best. Those who saw his
Mustang, Wirraway or Airspeed Courier
will have appreciated his skill. And he
was a very nice chap too. ■
