Pauline Vahey has been appointed as
ambassador of the Goodwood Aero
Club (GAC). A director of Aviatrice
Ltd, Board Director of AOPA,
former Chairman of the British
Women Pilots’ Association, and
Chairman of the General Aviation
Infrastructure Network (GAIN),
Pauline has a passion for aviation
and a desire to encourage more
people – particularly women and
young people – into the industry.
Her love of flying was born out of
admiration for her late Father, who
flew Wellington bombers during
WWII. After many years flying
gliders she gained a PPL, and used
skills gained in the software industry
and sales consultancy to help clients
in general aviation.
As a former Chairman of the
BWPA her objective was – and
remains – to encourage women into
aviation, either as a career or for
recreation. “Women have broken
into all sorts of professions,” she
says, “but aviation still seems to
be a bastion of male dominance.
I often go into schools and other
places where there are young
women and speak to them about the
opportunities that are out there to
become pilots.”

Of her appointment as
Goodwood’s ambassador she says:
“I used to be a GAC member and
what I like most about Goodwood
is the people, they really do want to
help, they’re not just trained to do
so. I am greatly looking forward to
helping Goodwood with its vision of
nurturing a vibrant and enthusiastic
Club, where new and existing
aviators are actively welcomed and
encouraged.”
Her role will include being a
judge at the Freddie March Spirit of
Aviation exhibition at the Goodwood
Revival Meeting in September, being
a guest speaker at club events and
social occasions and helping to guide
and improve it for members.

Kinross High School

Build-A-Plane will

fly soon
The young Build-A-Plane team at Kinross
High School is getting closer to takeoff this
summer as they work on the final stages
of their Eurofox that was bought by the
Aero Space Scientific Educational Trust
(ASSET). As reported in February’s Pilot
Notes, the kit was delivered to the school
last November to give pupils an after-
school opportunity to help assemble a real
aeroplane and encourage their interest in
pursuing STEM subjects. “It forms a first and
significant element of our overall strategy to
create the Aero Space Kinross science and
space centre in the area,” explains Alisdair
Stewart, Chairman of ASSET. “We see the
educational link as a vitally important one
and encourage young people in the area to
study with a STEM career in mind. And our
ambition is for further Scottish schools to
benefit from a similar Build-A-Plane project,
in due course.
“To date, the pupils have been given
dedicated time in learning the intricacies
of aviation engineering and applying this to
their own aeroplane housed at Kinross High
School, giving up their personal time after
school to allow this exciting project to take
place. They have now completed 90% of the
build, and are at the stage of intense finesse
work, as they plan for the exciting takeoff
this summer.” The Kitfox will make its public
debut at the East Fortune Air Show on 28
July. aerospacekinross.com
