TODAY 'S PARA RESCUE MEN CAN TRACE THEIR ORIGINS WAY
BACK TO 1922 AS EVEN BACK THEN IT WAS RECOGNISED THAT
HIGHLY TRAINED PERSONNEL WERE REQUIRED TO RESCUE
DOWNED AIRCREW, BUT BACK THEN THE ROLE WAS ADOPTED
BY THE ARMY MEDICAL CORPS, WHICH FORMED “AIRPL ANE
AMBUL ANCES" THAT WERE USED TO TAKE MEDICAL
PERSONNEL TO DOWNED PL ANES AND RE TURN THEIR
CREWS TO MEDICAL FACILITIES FOR TREATMENT.
Today's PJ's have served in every conflict since WWI not only saving
Aircrew, but also wounded soldiers and civilians that was evident in
Vietnam and Afghanistan.
Para-rescue men fall under the command of the United States Air
Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and Air Combat Command
(ACC) and are tasked with recovery and medical treatment of personnel
in combat environments. These special operations units are also used
to support NASA missions and have been used to recover astronauts
after water landings. PJ's are attached to other SOF teams from all
branches of the US Armed forces to conduct other missions as and
when requested.
