The Tokyo Marui Glock 17 has long been
something of a bench-mark in airsoft. Every
time a new pistol comes out, the inevitable
question is always raised: “What’s it like
compared to the Glock?”.
Marui’s Glock 17 has enviable range,
superb accuracy and nice big, fat magazines
that let the gun work well even in the cold.
It’s for that reason that I’ve always been so
reluctant to modify mine in any way. They
do have an achilles heel of course, and it’s
the fact that if you run it with too powerful
gas (and especially if you point it down
and fire), it can blow the slide off the rails,
potentially cracking it.
Breaking the plastic slide is the main
reason most people look at getting a metal
one. Mine was intact when I swapped it
over, but curiosity got the better of me,
and I’ve got to say, I’m delighted it did...
I recorded the cycling of the gun before
and after, then measured the time it took
to blow back the slide – in standard form
it took 0.16 seconds, and modified it was
just 0.17 seconds - too close to be worth
thinking about.
Remember, contrary to Die Hard, Luther,
and other films and programmes, the real
Glock 17 is NOT ceramic, nor is it made
entirely of plastic. It has a ‘plastic’ lower, or
frame, but the slide is all metal.
I’d recommend buying good quality kit,
like the Guarder range – I didn’t have to
modify the slide in any way to fit it, so this
is a simple job, with great rewards!
METAL SLIDE FIT!
AS AIRSOFT GUNS GO, NOTHING GIVES ME MUCH MORE OF A GRIN THAN
FIRING MY MARUI GLOCK NOW IT HAS A METAL SLIDE AND OUTER BARREL.
IF THAT’S CAUGHT YOUR AT TENTION - HERE’S HOW WE DID IT...
DISCL AIMER
This really is very easy! The
best advice is, as always, find a
clear, solid space to work, organise
your tools and parts, and take your
time. Besides losing the small blowback
unit spring, I can’t think of many
ways you could go wrong with this.
