MAYFLOWER
ASSAULT BACK PANEL
Mayflower’s Assault Back Panel were one of the first products of this type to hit the market and
features sew-in panels in addition to a small amount of MOLLE space. The entire panel is built
around a large hydration bladder which on top of that has two purpose built utility pouches.
The upper pouch is a fixed, zippered affair that is sized to hold a SOCOM issued NVG protective
insert, but is equally good at holding general items. The lower, tear off pouch is held in place by
a Velcro Panel and secured by buckled straps and is designed primarily as a medical pouch. It’s
also equally at home housing other utilities. The upper panel is difficult to access by the wearer
and requires a team mate to remove items from it, but the lower panel can be taken off without
too much difficulty by the wearer.

FERRO CONCEPTS
ASSAULT BACK PANEL
Ferro Concepts, the brand that (to our knowledge) kickstarted the whole back panel trend!
They have designed their back panel to fit perfectly onto modern, low profile plate carriers that
are cut tight to the plate itself but will fit any MOLLE covered plate carrier system. Much like
the Mayflower model, it comprises of a main hydration bladder compartment but instead hosts
4x fixed external pouches and no additional MOLLE webbing. A large utility pouch is fixed at
the lower section of the panel, which we have found to be ideal for supplies, skirmish/mission
essentials or emergency waterproofs. The upper portion houses 3x munitions pouches that can
be closed shut with a silent webbing strap to prevent loss of the contents. They are stabilised
by elastic bands around the middle. Size-wise they are adjustable for magazines or grenades
of various types, held in an easily accessible place for your teammates in a breaching stack
formation. We love a bit of Ferro Concepts nylon here at Ai HQ and rarely do any of the test
team take to the skirmish field without sporting one of these on their back!

SO WHO'S GOT YOUR BACK?
THE CONCEPT OF STORING ITEMS ON AN OPERATOR’S BACK MIGHT SEEM
COUNTERINTUITIVE. MOST OF THE TIME WE ARE HARPING ON ABOUT ENSURING
EQUIPMENT IS IN AN EASILY REACHED LOCATION ON THE LOAD CARRYING SYSTEM
AND THE BACK IS CERTAINLY NOT THAT... EVER HAD ONE OF THOSE ITCHES YOU JUST CAN’T REACH? SO HOW DOES IT
ALL WORK THEN? WELL, BASICALLY THE IDEA OF RUNNING KIT ON THE BACK COMES TO FRUITION WHEN OPERATING
AS A TEAM. IN THAT FAMILIAR LOOKING BREACHING STACK, THE BACK OF THE OPERATOR IN FRONT OF YOU IS
POSSIBLY EVEN EASIER TO REACH THAN YOUR OWN FRONT, SO THINGS LIKE GRENADES AND EXTRA MAGAZINES ARE
ACTUALLY CARRIED FOR YOUR TEAMMATES RATHER THAN YOURSELF. NOTHING BEATS A COORDINATED AND WELL
EQUIPPED TEAM IN A CQB SCENARIO.
