Celebrating a British icon 19

North of Marylebone Road is
the modern-style office block
that was once the Abbey National
building society’s headquarters.
Its range of street numbers
(219–229) takes in the fictitious
home of Sherlock Holmes, 221b,
though this part of the street
had not been built when Conan
Doyle’s books were written.
After the inevitable queue to
cross Marylebone Road, we
continue north past Georgian
terraces into elegant and leafy
Park Street, which runs along
the western side of Regent’s
