22 The London Bus
cause tiresome congestion.
We continue up Ballards Lane,
where the suburban landscape
is broken by the enticing
entrance to Victoria Park (not
to be confused with the one in
the East End). Soon we arrive
at a further commercial centre,
North Finchley, where the 13
terminates.
A famous cinema, the 2,000-
seat art deco Gaumont North
Finchley, stood here for 50
years, but was demolished in
1987 and was later replaced by
the sprawling ArtsDepot arts
complex, surmounted by a tall
residential tower. Under this
you will also find a modern but
rather forbidding indoor bus
station, which is used by the 13
at the start of its return journey
to central London.
The northern tip of this wedge-
shaped island site is known
as Tally Ho Corner – probably
after a stagecoach halt once
situated here, and a tavern of
the same name. The current
pub, though only built in 1927,
has an appropriate period feel
and makes a pleasant end to the
journey. ● PR
