ARCHIVE TREASURES
SPITFIRE Mk.21

I

t’s always pleasing to see
colour photos from World
War Two and the following
post-war period. Our choice
this month was prompted, in
part, by the build of Airfix’s
re-released 1/48 Spitfire F.22/24
kit, featured on p.42. In service
before those sub-types was
the Mk.21...the last Spitfire
with a high-backed fuselage.
Here, Mk.21s of 615 Squadron
Auxiliary Air Force are seen in
formation, with LA195/RAV-E
closest to the camera, in late
1946 or early 1947. The aircraft
wear the Day Fighter scheme
of Dark Green and Ocean Grey
over Medium Sea Grey, with
Sky spinners and fuselage
bands. Noteworthy is the unit
badge visible on three aircraft,
behind the spinner, and the
Type C1 fuselage roundels. Also
interesting is the spinner of the
fourth Spitfire, which is,
perhaps, freshly painted.
