Notes:
CVW-14 was disestablished on March 31, 2017
operating in the eastern Paci c and
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and
the Navy’s newest carrier USS Gerald
R. Ford (CVN 78) were conducting
training operations in the Atlantic.
The USS George Washington
(CVN 73), which arrived in Norfolk
in December 2015, is currently
undergoing a 48-month RCOH
(refueling and complex overhaul)
that began in August 2017. The USS
Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), the fth
Nimitz-class carrier to complete its
RCOH, was returned to the eet in
May 2017. The mid-life overhauls
permit the ships to serve the eet
for their entire 50-year design life.
The navy’s newest aircraft carrier
joined the eet when the USS
Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) was placed
in commission on July 22, 2017.
The ship is the rst of a new class of
aircraft carriers and will make its rst
deployment in 2021.
Although naval aviation is largely
identi ed by its carrier-based
aircraft, the service maintains a large
eet of land-based xed and rotary-
wing aircraft. It includes xed-wing
airlift, intelligence, surveillance
and reconnaissance (ISR) and
maritime patrol and rotary-wing
mine countermeasures and logistic
support helicopters. Nearly all of
these types are also tasked to make
regular deployments or maintain
forward-deployed detachments
that support of Combatant
Command (COCOM) requirements.
Inventory
In Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 naval
aviation, which includes US Marine
Corps aviation, is responsible
for 4,185 aircraft. At the end of
2017, the naval aviation inventory
accounted for more than 4,050
xed- and rotary-wing aircraft and
100 unmanned air systems (UAS).
