B

ased on a general slow-down of signifi cant news releases
from all of the big aircraft manufacturers around the
world, an editorial team always knows, without referring
to calendars, that something big is on the horizon:
Farnborough. The ever-growing Hampshire ‘metropolis’,
or Farnborough airfi eld at least, is due to host its biennial air show
between July 16 and 22. As usual, there’s no telling what is likely to
be unveiled or announced at the show other than, perhaps, more
big bags full of orders for Airbus and Boeing. That in itself is not
exciting, other than for the companies involved. Maybe the space and
unmanned sectors will yield something of interest. But that’s all for
next month; what about this one?
Since we closed up the June issue for press, any big story has
dropped out of the F-35 Lightning II programme: a big F135 engine
order for Pratt & Whitney, news from Israel that its F-35s have been into
combat over Syria, the fi rst combat for an F-35, the return of 12 US Air
Force F-35As assigned to the 388th Fighter Wing based at Hill Air Force
Base, Utah, from a six-month theatre security package deployment

to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, transfer of all four Japan Air Self
Defense Force F-35As from Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, to Misawa
Air Base, Japan, and arrival at RAF Marham of the UK’s fi rst four F-35B
Lightning IIs. That’s a lot of events from the world’s largest defence
programme and there are lots more to come in the months ahead.
Next month’s August issue will feature more UK F-35 coverage as part
of the fi rst of a two-part series examining the good, the bad and some
ugly aspects of the UK’s current airpower. AIR International August 2018
will be on sale in the UK and around the globe from July 26.
