Routes, an organiser of aviation network
development conferences and events, has
unveiled the results of its study that ex-
amined the busiest passenger air routes
across the world. According to the study,
the most popular route by passenger
count is the short-haul domestic service is
between Seoul’s Gimpo Airport and the
island of Jeju. It is reported that over 13.
million people travel on the 450km route,
which saw an increase of 9.4% over the
last 12 months.
The journey from Seoul to Jeju
boasts an average of 180 scheduled
fl ight per day and reportedly carries
4.36 million more passengers than the
second busiest route — Melbourne to
Sydney Kingsford Smith.
Routes’ analysis found that air servic-
es in the Asia-Pacifi c region dominated
the top 100 busiest routes by passenger

A South Korean route topped the list with 13.4 million passengers, while the Asia-Pacifi c


region dominated the top 100 air routes


numbers. Accounting for more than 70%
of the total, the region beat out the United
States, which still holds the title as the
world’s largest aviation market.
In terms of international routes, Hong
Kong to Ta iwa n Taoy ua n is t he busiest
route with over 6.7 million passengers
and 8th overall. The fastest-growing
route in the top 100 is the Thai domestic
route of Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Chi-
ang Mai, which grew 36% year-on-year to
reach 2.4 million.
The research was released ahead of the
recent World Routes 2018 event, which
took place from the 15 – 18 September in
Guangzhou, China. The event brings to-
gether the global airline, airport and tour-
ism organisation to debate market trends
and discover novel ways of capitalising on
the opportunities.

driver of passenger demand over the next
20 years. Such staggering aviation growth
means it is the perfect time for World
Routes to return to China,” commented
Steven Small, brand director of Routes.
“The event will bring together senior
decision makers from across the world
to plan new air services and discuss in-
creasing the frequency and capacity of
the existing routes that are popular with
passengers. The negotiations taking place
in Guangzhou could pave the way to the
busiest routes of the future.”
Presented by Routes, an entity un-
der the EMEA division of UBM, which
itself is part of Informa, the busiest
routes were calculated using an OAG
Schedules Analyser. The top 500 routes
were ordered initially by overall seat
capacity in 2017, before being ranked
by passengers using data provided by
Sabre Market Intelligence.
