A trendsetter

“In India, dialysis is reserved for the very
rich, or to those lucky enough to be eligible
for full medical reimbursement. Everyone
else faces crippling long term expenditure
and descent into deep poverty,” said Professor
Vivekanand Jha, Professor of Nephrology
and James Martin Professorial Fellow at the
University of Oxford in an article 'Dialysis in
India – Today and Tomorrow'.
There is a huge unmet need for dialysis but
affordability of the treatment has been a
roadblock. While India offers dialysis at one
tenth the price of western countries, only 12.5 to
13% of patients needing dialysis can afford the
treatment that comes to around Rs 15,000 to
25,000 per month.
Hospitals are reluctant to invest in dialysis
centres as the margins are low. It’s here that
professional players like NephroPlus are making
a world of difference by offering quality dialysis
at an affordable cost. NephroPlus's recent
acquisition of DaVita Care India has fortified
its presence further and now with its expected
Series D funding, it is planning to mark its
presence in the international market. Read
how the company is setting new benchmarks in
dialysis care in our cover story.
And as much as more dialysis centres are
needed, the Government needs to draft stringent
regulations for dialysis centres. Around 30%
of patients in India who get dialysis for two
years have a 30% chance of getting infected
by hepatitis B or C or HIV infection and thus
regulation for these centres is mandatory.
