9.1 General Introduction (Oebalus and Arvelius)

We herein include species that occur in the United States but do not meet our definition of invasive spe-
cies discussed in Chapter 1 (i.e., “invasive pentatomoids are non-native species whose populations
become established and spread, sometimes exhibiting uncontrolled population growth and displac-
ing native populations, and cause adverse socioeconomic, environmental, or human-health effects.”).
These species have become established but do not fully meet the rest of the definition.

9.2 Overview of Oebalus spp.

The genus Oebalus Stål (1862) is listed in much of the older literature as Solubea Bergroth (1891). Sailer
(1944) reviewed the genus as Solubea but later (1957) indicated that the name was a junior synonym of
Oebalus. It contains seven species (O. grisescens is invalid; see below), which are primarily Neotropical

(^1) Synonymy from Froeschner (1988).
