737 MAX 7 Debut

A welcome addition to the aircraft static park was an Italian Air Force
P-72A maritime patrol aircraft from Leonardo.

Airbus A380 Enters the Leonardo Presents P-72A

Second-hand Market
Portuguese company Hi Fly has become the rst operator of a
second-hand Airbus A380. The aircraft, 9H-MIP, ew into the show on
July 19. The A380 programme is still relatively young – the rst aircraft
entered service in October 2007 – and so when MSN006 came off
lease from Singapore Airlines after ten years, its lessor looked for
support from Airbus in nding a new operator.
After discussions with the lessor and potential customers, a deal
came together with Hi Fly, a specialist in wet lease operations, also
known in the aviation industry as ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance
and insurance). The company will lease the aircraft and crew to
airlines which, for example, need to replace a grounded aircraft or
want additional short-term capacity to meet passenger demand.

Italian AF and Leonardo Training School Venture
The Aeronautica Militare (AM, Italian
Air Force) and Leonardo have agreed
to co-operate on an International Flight
Training School (IFTS). Under the
deal, signed on July 17 at the show,
Leonardo will provide four additional
T-346A advanced jet trainers for the new

venture, which will begin in January at
Lecce-Galatina Air Base, home to the air
force’s 61° Stormo.
The IFTS will use the air force’s
existing training assets and provide
courses for Italian and international
aircrews. From 2021, the AM’s entire

advanced and pre-operational training
syllabus will be moved to a new,
dedicated facility at Lecce-Galatina,
which is also expected to include rotary-
wing and remotely-piloted platforms. The
new T-346As will join 18 others already in
service at the base.

Firefi ghting LM-100J
Lockheed Martin launched the FireHerc at the airshow. The new
civil version of the LM-100J (itself a derivative of the military C-130J
Super Hercules) can use two different retardant delivery options.
The Coulson Aviation USA retardant aerial delivery system (RADS)
has a capacity of 5,000 US gal (18,927 lit), while the Modular Aerial
Fire ghting System II accommodates 3,000 US gal (11,356 lit). The
latter requires less work to install in the aircraft and conversion may
be undertaken in four hours. Lockheed Martin is working to approve
a system for ghting res after dark, using multi-spectral sensors and
the ability to synthetically generate three-dimensional terrain features
which, when combined, will provide a night capability. Currently, no
 xed-wing tankers operate at night.
The LM-100J also demonstrated its manoeuvrability – important
when tackling blazes in challenging terrain – with an awe-inspiring
 ying display at the show.
