El Bosque (see Attrition, May,
p93), this Cherokee was also
destroyed inside the building.

This aircraft crashed into a
paddy field between the villages
of Kone Kyun and Myauk Yay
Kyi, Bago region, following a
technical failure shortly after
taking off from Taungoo air
base. The pilot ejected but
died later of his injuries.

Having taken off from Djibouti-
Ambouli International Airport,
the aircraft crashed after the
pilot ejected safely. The jet was
embarked aboard the Wasp-
class amphibious assault ship
USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) in support
of Exercise Alligator Dagger.

This helicopter sustained
structural damage upon landing
at an approved exercise landing
zone at Arta Beach, Djibouti.
The crew was unhurt but the
helicopter was left in situ at the
accident site pending further
assessment. It was assigned to
the 26th Marine Expeditionary
Unit on board the USS Iwo Jima
(LHD 7) and was participating
in Exercise Alligator Dagger.

Four marines were killed
when this helicopter crashed
about 15 miles (24km) west of
El Centro, California. It had
departed from the Strategic
Expeditionary Landing Field
at Marine Corps Air Ground
Combat Center Twentynine
Palms, California, to conduct
landings in unimproved zones.
This CH-53E had previously
been involved in a roll-over after
a hard landing near the Barry
M Goldwater Range, Arizona,
on April 5, 2017, while operating
with HMH-361, coded ‘YN-59’
- see Attrition, June 2017, p84.

‘Thunderbird 4’, Maj Stephen
Del Bagno, was killed when his
aircraft crashed on the Nevada
Test and Training Range.

Both crew members were killed
when this aircraft flew into
Mount Yuhak, Chilgok County,
North Gyeongsang Province,
while returning to its base at
Daegu flying on instruments in
poor visibility after a one-hour
air combat training mission.

During a night-vision goggle
training exercise as part of
Operation Mare Securio with the
Italian Navy ship Comandante
Borsini, the helicopter crashed
into the Mediterranean Sea
close to the vessel before rolling
over. Four of the five on board
were able to exit the helicopter
safely with only minor injuries. A
fifth crew member was killed.

During a training exercise
at Tyndall Air Force Base,
Florida, the F-22 experienced
a catastrophic failure in one of
its engines. The aircraft landed
safely at Tyndall and the pilot
was unhurt – it is not known how
much damage was caused to
the Raptor, which was deployed
from the 3rd Wing at Joint Base
Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

This helicopter crashed
during a routine instruction
flight in a training area at Fort
Campbell, Kentucky. Both
crew members were killed.

While taxiing to the fuel station
after landing at Hassfurt-
Schweinfurt Airfield, Bavaria,
following a flight from Manching,
the main rotors struck the airfield
control tower. Debris from the
rotors and the building hit an
airfield employee on the ground
who then died of his injuries. The
four crew members were unhurt.

Shortly after taking off from Boufarik
Airport for a flight to Béchar-
Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport, this
aircraft crashed in a field, caught fire
and was destroyed. All ten crew
and 247 passengers were killed.

During a routine training flight from
Batajnica, the aircraft crashed
near the village of Kovačica,
25 miles (40km) northeast of
Belgrade. Both crew – who
were test pilots from the Centar
za Letna Ispitvanja (CzLI, Flight
Test Centre) at Batajnica –
ejected, but one was killed.

The aircraft was returning to Skyros
Island with a second Mirage after
intercepting Turkish Air Force F-16s
that had reportedly violated Greek
airspace near the island of Lesbos,
USAF/US Embassy Bogota C-12C Huron 76-0160 after its emergency landing at Tumaco-La Florida Airport on April 23.
