when it is pressed together.
Despite never liking to inlict
damage on such a beautiful kit, I
elected to saw of the tail section,
again emulating what I had seen
in photos of deconstructed D.1s.
This was straightforward as there’s
an obvious join line. I cleaned up
the edges and added some stock
plastic strips to give an impression
of an interior framework. The
tail was put to one side to be
used as part of the diorama
“litter” later on in the build.
The wings are, as you might
expect, very easy to construct. As I
was leaving them of but potentially
still on view I again added some
basic framework to the open ends
with more plastic strip (although
in the following stages, the ends
ended up being covered, but more
of that later). There is a suggestion
of internal spars from support
sections that Wingnuts supply for
the wing, but these can certainly
be improved upon, particularly
when compared to the fuselage
opening, which is extremely
impressively represented.
There is one inal note of caution
on the wings – the join lines on
the leading edges are necessarily
corrugated, so again some care
is required here to minimize
any glue seepage, as clean up
perfectly could be problematic.PAINT SHOP
Painting-wise, it couldn’t have
been easier, having decided to go
with an overall metal inish (there
is a bare metal option in the
colour schemes provided).
A base layer of the MRP
Fine Black Primer helps to
provide some depth to the
inish. This was followed
by an overall light
coat of Alclad Aluminium,
followed up by some light
shading here and there with
some diferent shades of Alclad.
I was aiming for a fairly
dilapidated but not heavily
weathered look; I wanted it looking
a little jaded as if it had been in
storage outside for a short time.The period reference photos on
Wingnut Wings’ website and in
the instructions do show them
to be in a generally battered and
unloved condition in the ield.
I decided to omit the supplied
markings as I rather thought
