has to be metal/light green grey.
At this point I am still working
on the best way of how to achieve
the best look. Hopefully in Part
Two of this build I will be able
to share with you how I did it.
With the basics of the three
wings assembled my thoughts
turned to the undercarriage, as
effectively this is just an extra
wing. That said, the construction
method is quite different from
that of the wings. For a start, you
need to assemble the small jig
into which the parts will fit. The
axle box is then formed from the
etched-steel parts, and needs to befolded into shape. Once completed
the box will fit through the wing
ribs, along with the two wooden
dowel spars. Adding the etched
brass trailing edge finishes the
undercarriage wing section. The
use of that supplied jig really makes
the undercarriage assembly very
straightforward. The undercarriage
needs the addition of a thin
photo-etch steel cover to finish
it off, but as I am finding that
bending steel to a curved profile
is somewhat tricky, I am thinking
about replacing this with either
thin paper or thin aluminium sheet
from Albion Alloys, again another
thing we will cover that in Part 2.CONCLUSION
With the fuselage, tailplanes, three
wings, and the undercarriage all
basically assembled I can now see
just how big the model will be.
The airframe without the engine
Cowling is 43cm/17Inches and it has
a wingspan of 36cm/14¼ inches. This
is not as big as I feared, however, it
is definitely too big for my currentdisplay case, and my wife is still
asking where I am going to put it!
In the next part of this article,
my attention will turn to finishing
off the fuselage, as there is a lot of
detail still to add and I haven’t even
thought about starting the engine yet!
