Spring Viggen

SPECIAL HOBBY

I

will start with some future
news, for fans of the Saab
Viggen, the wait for the 1/72
scale version is getting shorter.
Special Hobby have started the
moulding now for the kit, which
will be released first by Tarangus
and we can expect to see the
Special Hobby version in May
next year. In February next year
we can look forward to seeing a
1/72 scale Breda ba.88b, but before
we see these, Special Hobby have
several new releases to tempt.
First up in 1/72 scale we have

the release of
the P-40K-1/5
Warhawk, this
version had the
shorter fuselage
and enlarged tail fin. In 1/48 scale
fans of Swedish aviation can look
forward to updated edition of the
Saab AJ37 Viggen ‘Attack Version’.
This kit features a new sprue which
addresses a couple of flaws in the
original release and offers some
extra parts too. In 1/32 scale the V1
flying bomb is ready to be released.
It was hoped this would be ready
for Eday but the decals weren’t

quite ready. However, we saw a
test shot and it looks like it should
be a quick simple build, I am quite
looking forward to the piloted
version as it will be something
just that little bit different. Now
who is going to scratch build
a 1/32 scale launch ramp?
In case you were expecting
the 1/48 scale Loire 130 to be
available, Special Hobby has

announced that this kit will
be delayed as unfortunately
the fuselage moulding tool
cracked. A new mould is being
prepared so hopefully the
delay won’t be too long.
New from CMK and previewed
in the accessory section is the 1/32
scale Bristol Centaurus engine
for the Special Hobby Tempest
Mk.II, this resin accessory is a
kit in its right! As ever the CMK
line of resin accessories is worth
a look as releases often tie in
with the Special Hobby kits.

s ever it was nice to
catch up with KP/AZ
at Eday and see their
latest releases in the plastic,
a MiG-21PFM and two seat
MiG-21UM and both look
very good. The kits offer two
fuselages and two sets of
wings for the different factory
produced versions. The 1/72
scale DH88 Comet has been
released with markings for
G-ACSS, as the pale green
prototype, as ‘The Burberry’
and as the rather attractive
pale green and blue ‘The
Orphan’. We will bring you
builds of these as soon as we
can. In other 1/72 scale news,
the L-159 Alca announced by
KP should be available by the
time you read this as it will be
premiered at the Model Hobby
event at the end of October.

I

t was my
pleasure to see
and hold the test
assembled 1/32 scale
DC-3/C-47 at Eda y.
And I have to say
it’s far larger than I
thought it would be! HpH
also had a test build of the
Peacemaker on display
and this is a huge model.
I can also report
that work is
progressing
on the 1/32
Handley Page
0/400 bomber,
although
unfortunately
no test parts
were on display.

s well as several
versions of the
Aero L-159 in
the markings of the
many air forces which
use it, Miniwing has
also released a 2 in 1
kit of the BAC Jet Provost
T.5. The kit comes with
three markings options,
an example flown by the
Red Pelicans Aerobatic

Team, the Provost flown
by HRH Prince Charles at
the RAF College and lastly
a Provost of No.6 Flying
Training School in 1990.

JBR MODEL

I

t was good
to catch up
with JBR at
Eday and see
their new Aero
L-159A kit in
1/144 scale. The plastic is by Miniwing
and the decals are by JBR. JBR have
released two
limited kits
one with the
markings for
the prototype
and the other
with the
markings of
the L-159A marked up as a Czech Squadron
Spitfire. The latter is one of the best
commemorative schemes I have ever seen.

Short Run Rarities

KORA

I

t was good to catch
up with Kora at
Eday, as they are
a company which has
not featured in these
pages for quite some
time. Kora have some
rather interesting rarities
in their kit catalogue.
Two of the latest 1/72
scale releases include the
Dewoitine D.27 III in Swiss
Air Force markings and a
double kit which has kits of

the Bf109G-6 and Saiman
202M with the markings
of examples captured by
the British. I must confess
I have not come across
the Saiman 202M before,
but a quick Google search,
has it as an Italian
two seat touring/
training plane. The
202M was used by the
Regia Aeronautica,
in flying schools and
they were also used
for liaison duties.

he US Navy was becoming increasingly alarmed at the growing trend towards the increasing weight in fighters
Sabre and the Navy’s F9F Panther, and Douglas came up with and attack aircraft of the day, such as the USAF’s F-86
a rather daring proposal for a jet fighter weighing only 7000 pounds, a design which eventually led to the A-4 Skyhawk.
The Navy showed some interest, but since they were already involved in the consideration of several other fighter designs,
they suggested that Douglas should apply the same sort of philosophy to the design of a carrier-based attack aircraft.
This aircraft would be intended for the nuclear strike role, with a top speed of 500mph, a combat radius of 345 miles, a
2000lb weapons load, and a maximum gross weight of less than 30,000 pounds. A Douglas a team led by Ed Heinemann
responded a couple of weeks later with a proposal that exceeded these requirements by a great margin. The normal
loaded weight of the aircraft would be only 12,000lbs, less than half the limit specified by the Navy, and the top speed

was 100mph more and the combat radius 115 miles greater. Douglas was authorised to proceed with further design
studies. During the evaluation, the range requirements were increased, raising the gross weight to 14,000lbs
aircraft with a modified delta planform, with a quarter chord The design team came up with a low-winged jet-powered
sweep of thirty-three degrees. The span was only twenty-seven feet six-inches, which eliminated any need for wing
folding and saving a lot of weight and complexity. The wing had three one-piece spars with span-wise stiffened skin.
The delta shaped wing formed a single box with integral fuel tankage, and the upper and lower skins were single pieces,
and the spars and stringers were continuous from tip to tip. The wing leading edge was equipped with automatic leading
edge slats, and split flaps were provided on the trailing edge. The leading edge slats were designed to drop automatically
at the appropriate speed by gravity and air pressure, thus saving weight and space by omitting actuation motors and
