any of you will be
aware of Fundekals, a
manufacturer that sells
their range exclusively from their
website, from which you then
download the instruction booklet.
This means that anyone with
web access has access to a superb
reference source, and in many
cases a great source of inspiration.
Though most of the range
includes multiple options, there
are a few sheets that have just
one marking option, normally
with an interesting story.
One of these sheets has been
provided for us to review.
The chosen subject is a Spitfire
Mk.1 flown by Squadron Leader
Douglas Farqhaur between
October 1939 and February 1941.
Andrew Douglas Farquhar was a
stockbroker in Glasgow who joined
the Auxiliary Air Force in 1927. By
January 1939 he was commander
of 602 Squadron and led them into
their first air battle on 16 October

  1. That day Farquhar claimed
a third of a Heinkel damaged,
and a half of an He 111 in action
over the Firth of Forth. Along

with 603 Squadron’s claims these
were the first Luftwaffe bombers
shot down by RAF Spitfires.
Farquhar would not score
again until 9 February 1940 when
he damaged an He 111 (1H+EN)
belonging to 5/KG 26 that signalled
surrender by lowering the
undercarriage. The Heinkel was

then forced to land and captured.
On the 22nd Farquhar, along
with P/O Victor Proudman, shot
down another Heinkel (T5+OH) that
crash landed near St Abb’s Head.
Farquhar, in an effort to capture this
bomber intact as well, attempted to
land alongside but instead wound
up upside down in his harness after

nosing over. The Luftwaffe crew
helped the Squadron Leader out
of the crippled Spitfire only after
setting fire to their own airplane.
Farquhar flew Spitfire
K9962 in all of these sorties.

CONCLUSION
How many decals do you buy
for just one option, then the rest
sit in the spares box, never to be
used? At just $5 to $9 this sheet
and the other six produced for the
Spitfire may just be the answer.
Visit their website at http://www.

range. I thank Jonathan Strickland
of Fundekals for supplying us
with the review samples.
