his latest disc from Aero
Research has 151 images
of aircraft from around
the world. It is an incredibly
diverse selection, featuring such
aircraft as the F-5A, in many
schemes, and the one that caught
my eye, the Turkish Stars display
team. The F-100 in Danish AF
markings would be a refreshing
change from USAF markings
and a wonderful opportunity
to practise your weathering
skills, as the Danish examples
were looking rather tired. There
are quite a few RAF subjects on
this disc, including some rather
nostalgic images of Lightnings
and Harriers in service.
One image surprised me
when I saw the date of 1978, as
it was an Argentine Pucara at
the Farnborough Air Show; I am

more used to seeing them in the
UK post-1982! The final image
on the disc is of an Avro York
transport in French Navy service.
I must confess I didn’t realise
other countries other than the UK
used them, so this would make an
interesting alternative scheme.
My thanks to Aero Research
for supplying this disc for
review, another fine mix of
photos with plenty to inspire!

A

long with the A-1,
A-6, and F-8, the F-4
Phantom is one of
the iconic US Navy aircraft
of the Vietnam War, and it
remains an ever-popular
subject with modellers.
This book, Number 125 in
Osprey’s Combat Aircraft
series, tells the story of the
US Navy units that flew the F-4
during the Vietnam conflict.
Starting with early days,
the author covers the history
of the Phantom’s involvement
in the Vietnam War and the
units that flew it, including one
Marine Unit (VMFA-333) within
the scope of this volume. The
narrative is illustrated with
a comprehensive selection of
photographs, and a series of
colour side profiles showing the
many colourful paint schemes

worn by the aircraft during
this period. Following the
main text, appendices list unit
deployments and describe the
colour profiles in more detail,
and an index is provided.
This is essential reading
for any US Navy enthusiast,
Phantom phan, or student
of the Vietnam War.
Thanks to Osprey Publishing
Ltd for the review copy.

GC 1/55: La Derniere Garde

Gouvernementale

AUTHOR: Matthieu Comas
YEAR: 2018
PUBLISHER: Editions Lela Presse
ISBN: 978-2-37468-008-8
FOR M AT: 197 pp Softback

T

his book tells the story of
Groupe de Chasse 1/55, a
unit of the French Armee
de l’Air involved in the Battle
of France, covering the period
between May to June 1940. The
author’s preamble reveals that he
started researching this unit in
1995, and this effort is reflected
in the coverage, the detail, and
the evident hard work that has
gone into creating this volume.
He admits that his researches
have not been easy, and there
was something of a mysterious
air about this group, which
was composed of personnel
from three nations – France,
Czechoslovakia and Poland.
The text is logically divided into
a number of chapters covering the
unit’s origins, various moves of
base, and eventual disbandment

on 25th June 1940 following the
capitulation of France. There are
then two chapters on the principal
types used, the Arsenal VG-33 and
MS410. However, the book does
not omit mention of the other
types used, such as the MS 406 and
Bloch 151. Illustrations throughout
consist of a wide selection of period
photographs, and colour profiles.
This has clearly been a
labour of love for the author, and
deserves a place on the bookshelf
of anyone with an interest in the
Armee de l’Air and/or the early
part of the Second World War.
Unfortunately, its full benefit will
only be gained by those readers
who have a good understanding
of French, as it is written and
published in that language, but
arguably it is worth purchasing
for the photographs alone. It may
even inspire you to take up or
rekindle skills in the language.
With that caveat, recommended.
Thanks to the publisher
for the review copy.
