and primed the model using
Mr. Surfacer 1500 black primer.
(After many years of service, my
second-hand Badger airbrush
was in need of replacement. I am
quite lucky, as Paul Fitzmaurice
of http://www.Modellingtools.co.uk is a

member of the same model club as
myself, so after chatting over my
modelling needs, he advised that
the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution
Silverline 2 in 1 would be a good
choice. This airbrush is proving
to be a fine investment, as it does
what I need and importantly
for me, it is easy to clean.)
Once the primer coat was dry the
model received a couple of overall
coats of Tamiya XF22 RLM02,
followed by a gloss coat from my
dwindling supply of Johnsons
Klear. With this done the decals
were added; I used Micro-Set
and Sol and they reacted well and
settled down with no silvering.

As I mentioned, no swastikas
are included on the decal sheet,
and although after-market ones
are available, I didn’t have any in
the right size or style in my decal
collection. My model was therefore
completed without them, but
they will be added when I have
found some suitable examples.
With the decals added I brushed
on a coat of Xtracrylix Satin Varnish
to seal everything in. The coat
was brushed on in the direction
of airflow, a technique which to
my eye adds the appearance of a
fabric effect. The cowlings were
given another coat of Klear, to
give them a slightly different

semi gloss finish, as these were
metal and would look different
from the fabric covered areas.
Now for the rigging. I used
Lycra thread, which has a flat cross
section that matches my reference
photos of the real aircraft. Prior
to the top wing being added I had
secured lengths of Lycra thread
in the pre-drilled holes. Once
the top wing was added, these
were carefully threaded through
