nyone who loves Spitfires

will know that the Eduard

series of 1/48 Late mark

Spitfires are by far and away the

best Spits in the scale. In 2016

Eduard pleased the modelling

world by reducing their Mk.IX

into 1/72 scale. Now, they have

released this, the Mk.VIII Spitfire.

There are 6 sprues in light grey

plastic, 1 clear sprue, 1 set of masks

and a fret of photo etched parts, in

a mix of pre-painted and standard

parts. There are 6 marking options

included in the decal sheet- 4 RAF,

1 USAAF and 1 Australian variant-

this is an early representation of

Bobby Gibbes famous Grey Nurse.

There are 165 grey parts on

the styrene sprues of those 56

are unused, carried over from

the earlier Mk.I release, but there

are also the extended wingtips,

suggesting an HF variant is not far

away. The kit’s panel lines and rivet

detail is beautifully refined and will

not look at all overdone when given

a coat of paint. One criticism I do

have of the kit is Eduard’s continued

use of the two part front cowl,

especially given their release of a

one piece Brassin resin replacement

for this part. Trying to remove the

seam line is difficult and you risk

losing a lot of the rivet and fastener

detail from this are of the model.

The cockpit of the model is fully

detailed. There is a choice of styrene

or photo etched instrument panel.

The etched panel is pre-painted

and includes all the detail normally

associated in Eduard parts. The

pilot’s harness is also in colour, but

the rest of the parts, including the

pilot’s harness, will need painting.

The clear parts are thin and

free from any distortion.

The decal sheet is well coloured,

perfectly in register and there is

also a fully detailed set of stencils

to accompany the main markings.

The usual level of additional

Eduard parts will are available

to add additional parts to this

kit in their Brassin range, as

well as additional detailing

parts in etched brass.

All in all this is a very welcome

release, Eduard have done a

fantastic job on this kit and I

look forward to building it.
